MR Conditional
Important alert
- Patients who do not have a complete SureScan pacing system, which includes a SureScan device and both atrial and ventricular SureScan leads, are contraindicated for an MRI scan.
- Patients with previously implanted (active or abandoned) medical devices, leads, lead extenders, or lead adaptors are contraindicated for an MRI scan.
- Patients with broken or intermittent leads are contraindicated for an MRI scan.
- Patients with a SureScan pacing system that has been implanted for less than 6 weeks are contraindicated for an MRI scan.
- Patients with a SureScan pacing system implanted in sites other than the left and right pectoral region are contraindicated for an MRI scan.
- A patient with an implanted SureScan pacing system must not be positioned on his or her side within the MRI bore. This position, called the lateral decubitus position, is contraindicated for all MRI scans.
- Use of local transmit-only coils or local transmit and receive coils placed directly over the pacing system has not been studied and such use is contraindicated.
- Patients with pacing capture threshold values of > 2.0 V at a pulse width of 0.4 ms are contraindicated for an MRI scan.
- Patients with a lead impedance value of < 200 Ω or > 1500 Ω are contraindicated for an MRI scan.
- Patients whose device will be programmed to an asynchronous pacing mode when MRI SureScan is on, and who have diaphragmatic stimulation at a pacing output of 5.0 V and at a pulse width of 1.0 ms are contraindicated for an MRI scan.
- Confirm lead compatibility with cardiology or the pacemaker clinic.
1Pre-scan checks
- The implanted system must consist solely of a SureScan device and SureScan leads.
- Check that no additional implantable devices are present. Check that abandoned or additional leads are not present. Check that no lead extenders or adaptors are present.
- Check that the leads are electrically intact.
- Check that the SureScan pacing system has been implanted for more than 6 weeks.
- Check that the SureScan device was implanted in the pectoral region.
- A patient with an implanted SureScan pacing system must not be positioned on his or her side within the MRI bore.
- To safely perform an MRI scan on a patient with the SureScan pacing system, MRI SureScan must be programmed to On using the 2090 programmer.
2MRI scan conditions
1.5 T
| Scanner type | hydrogen proton magnetic resonance imaging equipment with a static magnetic field of 1.5 T RF excitation frequency that is approximately 64 MHz in a 1.5 T static magnetic field cylindrical bore magnet, clinical MRI systems |
|---|---|
| Gradient slew rate | Gradient systems with maximum gradient slew rate performance per axis of ≤ 200 T/m/s must be used. |
| Whole-body SAR | Whole body averaged specific absorption rate (SAR) as reported by the MRI equipment must be ≤ 2.0 W/kg |
| Head SAR | head SAR as reported by the MRI equipment must be < 3.2 W/kg. |
| Scan region / position conditions | • There are no patient positioning restrictions relative to the MRI isocenter landmark when using the body coil.• A patient with an implanted SureScan pacing system must not be positioned on his or her side within the MRI bore. This position, called the lateral decubitus position, is contraindicated for all MRI scans. |
3RF COIL / RF excitation
| RF coil | • There are no patient positioning restrictions relative to the use of any receive-only coils.• Use of local transmit-only coils or local transmit and receive coils placed directly over the pacing system has not been studied and such use is contraindicated. |

4Monitoring & emergency response
- Proper patient monitoring must be provided during the MRI scan. This includes continuous monitoring of the patient’s hemodynamic function.
- Since the MR environment may interfere with the patient monitoring system, it is recommended that more than one of the following systems be used: electrocardiography / pulse oximetry / noninvasive blood pressure measurements.
- Keep an external defibrillator available during the MRI scan.
- If the patient’s hemodynamic function is compromised during the MRI scan, discontinue the MRI scan and take the proper measures to restore the patient’s hemodynamic function.
5Post-scan checks
- Program MRI SureScan to Off.
6Other information
- Cylindrical bore magnet, clinical MRI systems with a static magnetic field of 1.5 T (tesla) must be used.
- If the SureScan device or leads are within or near the imaging area of interest, then MRI image quality may be compromised.
- Patients may feel a mild tugging or vibration sensation at the site of the device implant while in or near the MRI scanner.
These conditions are based on the source document shown below (revision and date). Before scanning, verify the patient's complete system (device, leads, and any other implants) against the latest manufacturer labeling.
